Working in partnership with Skillnets and our contracting organisation, the Irish Medtech Association (Ibec sector), the Irish Medtech Association Skillnet has over the past number of years grown substantially in direct response to the training needs of industry. Total expenditure (2008-2015) is over €4.2 million, with 40% contribution from member companies and the remaining 60% funded by the state. Targets of over 6,000 trainees and 30,000 training days have been achieved.

Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) is the national foundation for investment in research in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to assist the development and competitiveness of industry, enterprise and employment in Ireland. It also promotes and supports STEM education and engagement to improve awareness and understanding of the value of STEM to society and to support the STEM careers pipeline.

SFI also promotes and supports the study of, education in, and engagement with STEM and promotes an awareness and understanding of the value of STEM to society and, in particular, to the growth of the economy. The definition of STEM employed by SFI does not extend to the Humanities and Social Sciences, except where it may pertain to the specific mission of the Foundation – for example, through the use of targeted instruments, SFI may support the development, assessment and publication of research to assess the impact of funded research activities, STEM teaching, etc.

First Polymer Training (FPT) Skillnet operates as an enterprise led training network for the Irish polymer industry and is funded by Skillnet Ireland and member companies. The network is in operation since 1999, initiated and promoted by Polymer Technology Ireland (Ibec). First Polymer Training’s objective is to provide subsidised technical training to industry, both at its technical training centre in Athlone or in-company as required. The centre in Athlone is a state of the art facility with a range of injection moulding machines, an extruder, a thermoformer and purpose built maintenance training boards.

First Polymer Training is the sole QQI validated provider of a range of polymer specific programmes and also works closely with Athlone and Sligo Institutes of Technology on delivering  3rd level polymer programmes for industry.

There are 140 companies currently in membership engaged in polymer processing,  across the MedTech, automotive, construction and electronics sectors.

In 2017 the Irish Medtech Association and Polymer Technology Ireland, the Ibec groups that represents the medtech and polymer sectors launched three new apprenticeships as part of the Department of Education and Skills wider national strategy. These include;


  • Manufacturing Technician Level 6 – 2 years
  • Manufacturing Engineer Level 7 – 3 years
  • Polymer Processing Technologist Level 7 – 3 years
